THE RANULF HIGDEN SOCIETY
The Ranulf Higden Society was founded in 1992 to
meet the needs of historians; local historians, family historians,
genealogists and others who regularly make use of documents written
in Latin and Anglo-Norman.
The Society, which has the support of the Universities
of Liverpool, Keele and Manchester, has a membership drawn from
free-standing researchers. The officers of the society are independant
scholars.
The area of interest of the society tends to cover
the ancient counties of Lancashire, Cumberland, Westmorland, Cheshire,
Staffordshire and Shropshire. It also welcomes free-standing researchers
from other parts of the country.
The Society organises three Saturday meetings each
year, one at Keele, when visiting scholars are invited to give advice
on particular classes of documents and their use. The location of
meetings varies among a number of centres in the North West. There
are also several research groups and the society publishes records
in Latin and is involved in a number of major funded research projects.
Why Ranulf Higden? Higden was a Cheshire monk who
entered the Abbey of St Werburgh's in Chester in 1299 and died in
1363. He wrote the Polychronicon, the most popular world
history in the Middle Ages. Although he was one of the most industrious
historians of the 14th century there is no evidence that
he studied at a university.
