Anne Worrall graduated from Keele University in Sociology and Applied Social Studies, with the Certificate of Qualification in Social Work. After several years as a probation officer, she returned to Keele to obtain an MA and PhD in Criminology. She worked as a Lecturer in Social Work at Manchester University before coming back to Keele in 1989. She was Head of the School of Criminology, Education, Sociology and Social Work from 2004-2007.

Teaching

Anne teaches in the area of criminal justice.  At Keele she currently teaches a third year undergraduate option module on Sentencing and the Community.  She also contributes to Years 1 and 2 undergraduate teaching and to the postgraduate course in Ethics of Policing and Criminal Justice.

Research

Anne has researched and published widely in the two (overlapping) areas of women and crime and non-custodial punishment. She has (co-)authored and (co-)edited the following books:

  • Gender, Crime and Justice (Open University Press: 1987)
  • Offending Women (Routledge: 1990)
  • Punishment in the Community (Addison Wesley Longman:1997)
  • Analysing Women's Imprisonment (Willan: 2004)
  • Girls' Violence (SUNY: 2004)
  • Punishment in the Community, 2nd Edition (Willan: 2005)

Anne has close connections with the University of Western Australia, Perth, where she teaches courses on women, crime and criminal justice and  is currently visiting 'Professor-at-Large', promoting inter-disciplinary research in criminal justice and social policy/ social work. She was also a member of the Parole Board of England and Wales from 2001-2007 and is currently developing research interests in

  • Non-compliance, Enforcement and the Revolving Door of Licence Revocation
  • Occupational identity in the National Offender Management Service
