Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry at Keele

What can you do with a degree in Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry?

A degree (single or dual honours) in Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry gives you many advantages over other graduates.  You will have good numerical and analytical skills, be adept at problem solving, have a higher level of computational skills and be able to think in the abstract.  These skills are highly desired by employers.

“Chemistry at Keele teaches you a wide range of skills that can be used in many different professions.  The modern facilities and equipment allow taught theory to be put into practice allowing a smooth transition between your degree and industry.”
David Thompson,
Chemistry and Forensic Science
Graduated July 2007

The dual honours system at Keele University gives you the greater advantage of being able to combine these skills with those gained in your other subject.  For example, students graduating with combinations of Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry with Economics, Management Science and Human Resource Management often enter into the commercial and marketing side of the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries. Graduates with degrees combining Chemistry and Law can continue to Law School and apply their scientific knowledge by working in areas such as Patent Law or Environmental Legislation.

Many students find a career in teaching very appealing.  Their broad scientific knowledge is ideal for teaching cross-disciplinary science at GCSE and A-level. A significant proportion (around 30 %) of our graduates continue their studies by selecting postgraduate research degree courses, often pursuing research questions first introduced during their studies at Keele.

The Royal Society of Chemistry has extensive resources available regarding Chemistry Careers.
