Sponsored by the David Bruce Centre for American Studies, "Uncovering the Scholarly Edition" is a one-day conference taking place on June 18th 2008. Designed to present new research into how literary scholars and academic publishers produce the books we read, it will feature papers by our own Professor Oliver Harris as well as visiting speakers including Linda Bree, of Cambridge UP, and Professor David Hopkins, of the University of Bristol. Enquires to o.c.g.harris@ams.keele.ac.uk.
To celebrate and honour the memory of Charles Swann, Reader in American Literature, who taught with unique distinction in American Studies for many years, we are pleased to announce the creation of a Prize for Literature in his name. The prize will be awarded annually to a student whose outstanding achievements are recognised by the final Exam Board, and is open to all American Studies finalists (whether Dual or Single Honours American Studies, or English and American Literatures). The prize-winner will be notified by the Programme Director at the time final results are published.
The American Studies programme is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. James Peacock (from January 2007). Dr. Peacock, who has moved from the University of Edinburgh to take up the position at Keele, has been specifically appointed to teach and develop the thriving English and American Literatures degree programme.
A special award was presented during the July degree ceremonies to Dr Jonathan Parker. During his time at Keele, Jonathan has demonstrated an exceptional ability to inspire and enable his students to achieve specific learning outcomes and inspire his colleagues in their learning, teaching and assessment practice. He has shown significant evidence of his ability to positively influence the wider learning community in his subject area, American Studies, and in relation to educational practice. Jonathan is Keele University's nomination for the National Teaching Fellowship award 2005.
Professor Francis Frascina has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship worth £19580 to continue his investigations into September 11: Images, Texts and Debates during 2004-5.
Dr Oliver Harris has won a 4-month, £14,000 AHRB Research Leave scheme award for the second semester of 2004-5. The award, combined with a sabbatical, will enable him to complete a new editorial project, the definitive edition of “The Yage Letters”, that follows publication in 2003 of his edition of Burroughs' novel, Junky and of a critical monograph (William Burroughs and the Secret of Fascination).
Dr Tim Lustig, working with Ann McGruer from the School of English, has been awarded an AHRB grant of £4000 to support a postgraduate conference (“Readers, Audiences and Coteries in Early Modern England”) in 2005 and 2006.
Professor Ian Bell has been selected to serve on the Arts and Humanities Research Board Peer Review College.
In a major expansion of our undergraduate degree programmes, the School of American Studies is introducing a brand new degree starting September 2004, in addition to the current Dual Honours programme in American Studies and the Single Honours programme in English and American Literatures. The degree is Single Honours in American Studies.

Head of School Christopher Bailey congratulated all members of the School on achieving a 5 rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (the `RAE'). The School of American Studies has now achieved this top ranking in every RAE. Professor Bailey would like to thank all members of the School for their excellent work. A 5 means that about half of the research done in the department has been judged to be of international excellence, with virtually all of it to be of national excellence.
