hubble Edwin Hubble

Born in 1889, the American astronomer's research pointed out galaxies beyond this one and led to the theory of an expanding universe. Hubble worked at the Mount Wilson observatory. He died in 1953.

The Hubble Space Telescope was launched on April 24th 1990 and, free from atmospheric disturbance, has given astronomers greater insights into - and even more far out pictures of - the universe than previously obtainable, including the beautiful Gaseous Pillars in M16 - Eagle Nebula.

Photograph of Hubble courtesy of Mt.Wilson and Palomar Observatories.
