Exam & Assessment Arrangements
Examination & Assessment Arrangements
A variety of arrangements are available to ensure that examinations and assessments are accessible. A range of assessment methods are used where appropriate, for example, examinations, coursework, presentations and practical tasks.
Feedback is given on assessments to assist you in developing your skills and abilities. Requests for reasonable adjustments or alternative assessments are considered when students feel that the standard assessment method may unfairly disadvantage them. You can discuss the exams and assessments on
your course with DDS or your Needs Assessor. Support strategies and adjustments can then be recommended; these will be individual to your
needs and may include:
• Additional time
• Use of a computer or amanuensis
• Rest breaks
• Exam papers in Braille, large print or on a specific coloured paper
• Taking examinations in a smaller room
• Taking examinations in an individual room*
*The university has a policy whereby individual rooms are provided only for students who require a reader, amanuensis, or those who are blind or have epilepsy or a severe mental health issues
Where necessary, we can support you to make a case for a deadline extension or for extenuating circumstances to be taken into account.
We will work with you to identify issues presented by other modes of assessment and look to make reasonable adjustments.
For example:
Presentations could be arranged so that you present in front of a smaller group or just to the tutor. If this is not appropriate we can explore options for alternative assessment and you may be able to write a presentation and submit it in written form.
Stickers
We can issue you with stickers. Keele uses a sticker system to identify assessed work that has been completed by a student with written communication difficulties, such as SpLD, Aspergers Syndrome or for those who are blind or partially sighted. This alerts the marker to assess for understanding of subject knowledge, relevance of materials selected and arguments proposed, logical coherence, critical evaluation, evidence of synthesis and creativity and originality, dependant on the module requirements.
Please be aware that some support takes time to organise. Therefore it is important that you contact DDS as soon as possible in order to meet the deadline for having arrangements put in place. In general support for First Semester examinations MUST be agreed by the end of October and Second Semester exams by the end of March.
On occasions where it is not possible to put arrangements in place because the deadline has passed DDS will support you to apply for Extenuating Circumstances and ensure that appropriate support is available for the next examination period.
