MOVING ON UP
Moving On Up is an event for prospective Keele students with complex disabilities. It is designed to provide an opportunity for you to familiarise yourself with the campus and get a taste of life at Keele before the start of the academic year.
…it was very informative providing all sorts for new people like me in terms of what you needed to know about how things work, what was to be expected when you got started and an idea of how life might be like. But more importantly I learned that I'd never really be alone throughout my time at Keele, where to go when I needed help and who to talk to when I'd need to solve issues regarding my disability” – Matthew - Geosciences
The event is run from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon and involves activities such as a mini lecture and seminar, a campus tour including the opportunity to view the accommodation you will be living in and an evening barbeque with entertainment. The weekend includes free accommodation and meals.
The main thing I would say about last year's event was that it was really useful to meet other people with disabilities at Keele - I am still friends with some of those people now. I also think that it made me a bit less nervous about starting University” – Maya English & Media
Students who attended last year’s event had included those with mobility difficulties, Asperger’s Syndrome and visual impairments. If you are unsure if this event is for you please contact us for further information.
The event … helped me as it put my mind at rest about whether the accommodation would be suitable as we were shown to our actual rooms. I feel that this event was also very beneficial to my mum who also attended as it put her at ease about me going away to university. All in all this was a very worthwhile event and settling in to university life would have been far more complex without it” – Rachel Psychology & Sociology
We offer the opportunity for students to bring a parent or carer with them to the event and parents have found the experience as useful and reassuring as the students.
My daughter has had a great first year at Keele and we were both reassured hugely by the event last September so thank you” – Sara (parent)
