  Double grant success for Ages and Stages Posted on 19 July 2013 Professor Miriam Bernard, Ages & Stages Project Leader and Director of Keele's Centre for Social Gerontology, has been awarded two grants by the AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council) under their 'Cultural Value Project' scheme.   Ages and Stages in Canada Posted on 12 July 2013 The Ages & Stages research team have returned from Canada where they attended the annual 'Creative Age Festival', participated in FEST (the Festival of Seniors Theatre) and held research meetings with their partner project at the University of Alberta.   OBE awarded to former Keele Gerontologist Posted on 03 July 2013 Professor Judith Eleri Phillips was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours list for ‘services to Older People’.   Keele team evaluate AgeUK’s national programme Posted on 12 July 2013 A research team from Keele has completed an evaluation of AgeUK’s £15.1 million 'fit as a fiddle' programme. The programme, which spanned the nine English regions, consisted of a portfolio of activities that increased the opportunities for older people to undertake physical activities and improve their eating habits, with the aim of improving both physical and mental health.   Environmental Gerontology - new book Posted on 24 May 2013 Environmental Gerontology: making meaningful places in old age is the latest book from Professor Miriam Bernard, of Keele's Centre for Social Gerontology, with Kentucky University colleague, Professor Graham Rowles.   Gerontologists in the Arctic Posted on 10 May 2013 Dr Mo Ray and Professor Miriam Bernard from Keele's Centre for Social Gerontology were invited participants at a four day international research meeting on 'Families in Later Life' funded by the University of Lapland. The meeting, organised by Marjaana Seppänen, Professor of Gerontological Social Work in the Faculty of Social Sciences, was held in Rovaniemi and Keropirtti in Northern Finland.   Keele study on childless men hits the headlines Posted on 05 April 2013 Robin Hadley, a doctoral student in the Centre for Social Gerontology, presented his research on the experiences of involuntarily childless men as they age at the British Sociology Association annual conference this week.   Has the sisterhood forgotten older women? Posted on 22 March 2013 Professor Miriam Bernard, Director of Keele's Centre for Social Gerontology, and Sue Westwood, PhD student in the Research Institute for Social Sciences (Law), have contributed to this new collection of essays in celebration of International Women's Day 2013.   'Ages and Stages' in the spotlight at Edinburgh Conference Posted on 22 March 2013 The 'Ages and Stages' project has been in the spotlight again, featuring in the keynote address given to the 'Generations Working Together' Annual Conference in Edinburgh.   Beyond the book Posted on 08 March 2013 Professor Miriam Bernard, Director of Keele's Centre for Social Gerontology, was an invited speaker at the London School of Economics' recent 5th annual 'Space for Thought Literary Festival'. She took part in an event entitled: 'Beyond the Book: new forms of academic communication'.   Centre for Social Gerontology hosts 41st Annual Conference of the British Society of Gerontology Posted on 23 July 2012 In July 2012, members of the Centre for Social Gerontology hosted the British Society of Gerontology’s Annual Conference for a record fourth time (previous Keele conferences took place in 1985, 1995 and 2005).   'Ages and Stages' team awarded 'follow-on-funding' Posted on 13 July 2012 The Ages and Stages research team, led by Professor Mim Bernard, has been awarded a 12 month Follow-on Funding grant by the Arts & Humanities Research Council to the value of £114,579.

The additional financial support will enable the team to develop the research-led learning from the initial project and continue the collaborative work between the University and the NewVicTheatre.
  'Ages and Stages' exhibition opens Posted on 06 July 2012 This week saw the official opening of the 'Ages and Stages' Exhibition which is on show to the public at the New Vic Theatre until July 21st. Over tea and homemade cakes, a hundred people who have been involved with the Ages & Stages research project gathered at the theatre to mark the occasion.   NICE Social Care Fellowship Posted on 19 March 2012 Mo Ray has been appointed as a NICE social care fellow as part of the 2012 Fellowship intake. The three year fellowship attracts high profile social care professionals with the capacity to influence practice, who are committed to evidence and research based practice as well as advising NICE as it develops its social care programme.   Ageing Without Children Posted on 01 February 2012 Dr Mo Ray (Centre for Social Gerontology, Keele University) and Mary Pat Sullivan (Brunel University) have been awarded a £3,000 grant by the Averil Osborn Fund to undertake some exploratory research exploring the experience of ageing without children.   ‘Life after a PhD’ for researchers on ageing and later life Posted on 04 January 2012 Hosted by the Centre for Social Gerontology (CSG) in collaboration with the Emerging Researchers in Ageing (ERA) group of the British Society of Gerontology, Friday December 9th 2011 saw around 30 students, post-doctoral researchers and staff gather at Keele for this one-day conference in the Moser Research Centre.   Ages and Stages Blog Posted on 08 December 2011 The Ages and Stages project now has a blog: http://www.agesandstagesproject.blogspot.com/   British Society of Gerontology Annual Conference 2012 at Keele Posted on 06 October 2011 The website for next year’s annual conference of the British Society of Gerontology is now live.   Growing Older in Urban Environments: Perspectives from Japan and the UK Posted on 14 September 2011 A report of a symposium on growing older in urban environments is now available to download. The symposium was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in association with the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the International Longevity Centre (Japan/UK).   Impact of Ageing Societies on Urban Populations Posted on 07 April 2011 Professor Chris Phillipson, Centre for Social Gerontology, organised a Symposium at the end of March 2011 in London sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science.   FUTURAGE Posted on 04 October 2010 Chris Phillipson has become a member of the Council of Scientists for the FUTURAGE Project.   New President of the British Society of Gerontology Posted on 02 August 2010 Professor Miriam Bernard, Director of the Centre for Social Gerontology, has taken up the role of President of the British Society of Gerontology (BSG), following the Society's 39th annual conference at Brunel University. Mim will lead the Society's work for the next two years.   Global Perspectives on Ageing Societies Posted on 01 July 2010 Chris Phillipson has just published (with Dale Dannefer of Case Western Reserve University) the Sage Handbook of Social Gerontology. The Handbook contains 50 chapters written by leading researchers in the field of ageing.   New Director Posted on 01 June 2010 Professor Miriam Bernard has taken on the role of Director of the Centre for Social Gerontology following the recent departure of Prof Tom Scharf to head up the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology at the National University of Ireland in Galway.
  Summer School in Social Gerontology at Keele University Posted on 01 March 2010 The Centre for Social Gerontology is to host a summer school focusing on the study of ageing and late life. The six-day event will explore current trends in gerontology research, looking at themes including social policy and family life.   Theatre as a Pathway to Healthy Ageing Posted on 01 March 2010 The multi-research council funded New Dynamics of Ageing Ages and Stages project, led by Mim Bernard, is set to collaborate with Canadian colleagues following a successful bid under the "Canadian Institutes for Health Research-UK 'New Dynamics of Ageing' Research Initiative".   The Lost Generation Posted on 01 March 2010 Dana Rosenfeld has been awarded £7,440 by The British Academy as Principal Investigator for a two-year project titled 'The Lost Generation': The Social Worlds of Older Gay Male Survivors of the AIDS Epidemic.'
