Critical Incident Support
Staff members and Students at Keele may potentially be supporting students experiencing a personal, emotional or mental wellbeing crisis. They may also receive information from a student’s family, their friends or others that causes alarm and concern about the student. The University recognises that it can be stressful to interact with someone in distress and may result in staff and fellow students not only feeling unsure about how to respond but also feeling responsible, helpless, fearful, frustrated or angry.
The University therefore has a team for supporting students and their supporters, be they a friend, staff member or family member, at times of crisis, or the period following on from distressing events.
The team are available to provide a timely and appropriate response to a range of difficult/distressing situations, which can include:
- Mental Health related crises
- Non-elective hospitalisation of students
- Death and bereavement affecting students
- Attempted suicide
- National/international disasters
- Students who are victims of crime or have been accused of a crime
- Student disappearance
- Students unable to cope with challenging aspects of university life
If you are a student facing these or similar situations, or a friend/member of staff who is worried about the welfare of a student, then you can speak to one of the team. In some instances, you may be referred to an alternative and more relevant service but by speaking to someone a potentially stressful situation can be shared.

If you want to talk to someone face-to-face then call the team to make an appointment or just drop in at the Student Support Reception in the Walter Moberly Building. A Coordinator will always be on-call during normal working hours.
