Criminology

Evi Girling was born in Cyprus and moved to the UK in 1987 after completing her undergraduate studies at Duke University in North Carolina.  She obtained her MPhil and DPhil (1993) in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford (Linacre College).  She studied law for two years completing the Common Professional Examination (1993) and the Legal Practice Course (1994).  She held two research fellowships on ESRC funded projects at Keele between 1994 and 1997 and was appointed as a lecturer in 1997.

I currently carry out research on penal sensibilities focusing on issues of globalization and identity; the Italian anti-death penalty movement, restorative justice, globalization and punishment.

I teach qualitative methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and offer a third year option on the Cultures of the Death Penalty.
