The Keele Clinical Management Courses for SpRs and StRs
About Us
The Keele clinical management courses are designed and delivered by the Clinical Management and Leadership Team, based in the School of Medicine at Keele University. We are able to draw upon 30 years' experience in this field and we bring this knowledge and understanding to the development of courses focused on meeting your specific needs at this stage in your career.
Our Approach
Our specialty-based clinical management courses aim to equip you with the management and leadership skills necessary to make the transition to independent specialist practice at consultant level. We help you to make sense of the new changes being introduced into the NHS, to gain insight into your own personality and your impact on others and to operate effectively in the current pressurised management environment. The knowledge gained will enable you to apply with confidence for your chosen consultant post.
Our Participants
Our courses are specifically designed for all those who are planning to apply for a consultant post in the next two years.
Course Design
Each day is themed and linked to the NHS Leadership Framework launched in 2011. Day One is designed to help you to understand how the NHS operates (and will operate in the future), Day Two focuses on developing your management and leadership skills and Day Three explores how you can start to improve your clinical service. On the afternoon of Day Three, we will consider the practical aspects of becoming a consultant, with sessions on the logistics of the process, including the interview, and on the responsibilities of the role.
Our Outcomes
By the end of your course, you will have acquired:
- relevant and important knowledge about the NHS and current health policy, particularly around your own specialty
- an understanding of the new management structures and processes within the NHS and how they will affect you as a consultant
- insight into your personality and leadership style and your ability to work with, and influence, others
- the key management and leadership skills necessary to function effectively in your early years as a consultant
- an appreciation of how to develop and improve your clinical service
- knowledge about how to secure your consultant post and start life in your new role!
Our Team
Our courses are led by a Faculty Course Director (Jenny Cowpe, Director of the Clinical Management and Leadership Team, or Maureen Morgan OBE, Senior Teaching Fellow in Clinical Leadership), who is supported by a dedicated programme administrator from the Clinical Management and Leadership Team. In addition, your will meet policy experts, personal development consultants and senior clinicians from your specialty and from the Medical Royal Colleges.
Our Course Organisation
The Keele based course is offered on a non-residential or residential basis. The non-residential course includes tuition, all meals, and the course dinner, which is an intregral part of the programme. The residential course includes tuition, all meals, including the course dinner, and two nights of accommodation, with an option to book one night of accommodation only (second evening after the course dinner). The residential course also includes the option to book three nights of accommodation, to include the night prior to the start of the course.
