School of Medicine

Specialty Doctors, Staff Grades and Associate Specialists

Our two-day courses are intended for SAS doctors who wish to extend their understanding of clinical management and leadership as part of their professional development. We have been running such courses at Keele for three years. We were the first to do so and are pleased to see that the Department of Health (DH) has recognised the importance of professional development opportunities for this group of doctors and the necessity for adequate resources and funding to be available for this activity.

Aim

The overall aims of the courses are to provide understanding of clinical management and leadership in today’s healthcare systems, and to equip participants with knowledge, skills and attributes to enable them to be more effective in their roles

Course design

The course design includes a mixture of interactive talks from policy experts, personal development consultants and senior clinicians, and small group activities.

The sessions are themed and linked to the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF), developed by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement on behalf of the Academy of Royal Colleges. These include understanding current DH policy and how the current NHS operates, developing yourself as a leader and introduction to some useful management tools for developing and leading services.

The courses are supported by a designated tutor and programme administrator from the Clinical Management and Leadership Team. Compact discs containing significant documents, suggested reading materials and links to relevant organisations are sent to all participants prior to the course.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, participants should have acquired the following:

  • relevant and important knowledge about the NHS and current policy
  • an understanding of the management structures and processes within the NHS and how they will affect them
  • leadership and team working skills with some insight into personal development needs
  • a range of management tools for leading and managing a clinical service
