Courses for Specialist Registrars
Our three-day courses are intended for Specialist Registrars (SpRs) in their penultimate or final years of training, although they may be of interest to SpRs earlier in their careers. They are specialty based and satisfy the curriculum requirements for acquiring general professional skills in order to complete training.
Aim
The overall aim of these courses is to prepare SpRs for the transition from training to independent specialist practice at Consultant level, focusing on the management tasks, issues and problems likely to be faced by today’s Consultants; the knowledge, skills and attributes required; and the logistics of the appointment process.
Course design
The course design includes a mixture of interactive talks from policy experts, personal development consultants and senior people from the appropriate Medical Royal College, as well as small group activities.
Each day is themed and linked to the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF), developed by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement on behalf of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. Day One is designed to give understanding of how the current NHS operates. Day Two focuses on personal leadership development and also provides practical information on becoming a consultant, including interview practice. Day Three considers future development of the specialty, introducing some useful tools for business planning and project management.
Each course is supported by a designated tutor and programme administrator from the Clinical Management and Leadership Team. Compact discs containing significant documents, suggested reading materials and links to relevant organisations are sent to all participants prior to the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course participants will have acquired the following:
- relevant and important knowledge about the NHS and current policy, particularly around their own specialty
- an understanding of the management structures and processes within the NHS and how they affect Consultants
- leadership and team working skills and some insight into personal development needs
- an understanding of the role of a doctor, particularly with regard to professionalism, ethics and governance
- basic knowledge and skills required for service development and strategic planning
