Nurses and AHPs - Keele University

School of Medicine

LEADING AT THE FRONT LINE: A programme for nurses, midwives, health visitors, AHPs, doctors and other professionals responsible for leading clinical services

This is a specially designed programme for professionals working at band 6-8 (or equivalent), who are responsible for delivering high quality, safe patient care, in all health and social care settings.

It is particularly focused on helping you get the very best from yourself and your team, and will enable you to make a significant contribution to the strategic goals of your service and organisation.

Why You Should Come

Turbulent times require leaders with complex skills, not just in the boardroom or in higher echelons of management, but at the front line, at the interface with patients, where quality is defined by what actually happens to them and their families.

The programme will help you to develop your resilience and fulfil your potential to become exceptional leaders, well-prepared and confident in your ability to confront the issues of the day.

We will focus on the practical skills and knowledge you need to make a real and immediate difference to the way you and your team work, rather than on the theoretical basis of leadership.

We have designed the programme to enable you to become more effective in your current role, but it may also assist you in laying a firm foundation for career advancement, should you wish to gain a more senior position.

What You Will Learn

You will explore the political and socio-economic climate in which you work to help you acquire political astuteness and be able to handle the changing health agenda.  You will learn more about yourself, leading others, influencing and negotiating, how to have difficult conversations productively, and how to improve performance and get things done.

Who Will Help

We will use a mix of high profile leaders from the services as well as academic staff and associates, each of whom has considerable experience in health and social care or in personal development.

How will the Programme Work

There are three interlocking elements of the programme, each aimed at increasing practical skills, knowledge and competence to lead change and deliver real and sustained improvements for a diverse range of patients across the spectrum of health and social care.

 It will comprise:

1.  Preparatory work

This will include finding and then working with your organisational sponsor to agree a current issue in your service you want to work on during the programme.  You will also need to ensure your learning objectives are embedded in your personal development plan.  You will be asked to complete a specially designed 360 degree feedback process and personal reflection sheet.  We will also send you reading materials to help the process of learning.

2.  A two and a half day residential event at Keele University

This is an opportunity to hear from leading figures and experts about the major issues affecting health and social care, leadership styles, increasing personal effectiveness and how to get things done.  Masterclass style presentations will be interspersed with group learning, problem-solving and reflection.  Learning will continue into the evenings to maximise the use of time available.

3.  There will be two facilitated action-learning set days to help you take forward your identified key issue, reflect and identify new knowledge and solutions and form ideas for action.  You will be encouraged to use a questioning approach throughout.  You will present with your cohort your key areas of learning and provide examples of changes you have enabled during the final meeting, which will be attended by your sponsor.
