Leadership Development Programme for Consultants

For 2012 the Clinical Management and Leadership Team at Keele is pleased to offer again its portfolio of leadership development programmes for Consultants: firstly, a foundation programme, which is suitable for Consultants in both acute and mental health specialties who have had no previous formal leadership development; secondly, an advanced programme for those who want to develop their leadership skills further, suitable for Clinical Leads, Clinical and Divisional Directors and Consultants who have already had some formal training.

These two-day residential programmes focus on the leadership skills required for effective practice in Consultant and Clinical Leadership roles in an increasingly challenging financial environment. Through a mix of theory, self-analysis and practical work, they aim to improve knowledge and understanding of leadership, so helping the individual to function confidently and effectively.

Programme design

The foundation programme includes:

  • examining what leading and managing mean in the 21st Century
  • exploring the role of the clinical leader in the modern NHS
  • a diagnostic process to give participants a deeper insight into their own approach and style as a leader
  • a choice of practical sessions to develop key leadership skills.

The advanced programme:

  • has at its core the skills needed to lead and manage radical change against the backdrop of the very significant financial savings required of the NHS over the next few years, and
  • a focus on deepening understanding of change processes, equipping participants with new approaches to leading change effectively.

The advanced programme also offers the opportunity to access executive coaching as an additional development activity.

Learning outcomes

The foundation programme will provide knowledge, insight and skills with:

  • a better understanding of what leading and managing mean in the new NHS context
  • a deeper insight into personal behaviour patterns and how they impact on others
  • skills and techniques for leading in practice effectively.

In the advanced programme participants will be challenged to evaluate their personal leadership styles, skills and practice and will leave with a much greater understanding and enhanced personal skills in leading and managing radical change.

This programme, in particular, will use small group work and case studies to enable participants to explore issues with their colleagues and begin to develop effective solutions to some of our current health care challenges.

Both programmes are supported by an experienced Programme Director and external speakers with expertise in the chosen subject areas. Compact discs containing significant documents, suggested reading materials and links to relevant organisations are sent to all participants prior to programme commencement.

12 CPD points will be accredited to these programmes.
