Foundation

Foundation Programme

The Clinical Management and Leadership Team at Keele is pleased to offer again its popular leadership foundation programme, which is suitable for clinicians from all health professions in both acute and mental health specialties, and in primary care, who have had no previous formal leadership development.

This two-day residential programme, delivered by Keele faculty, NHS staff and professional leadership experts, focuses on the leadership skills which you require to be effective in your role in an increasingly challenging financial environment.  Through a mix of theory, self-analysis and practical work, it aims to improve your knowledge and understanding and to equip you to practise confidently and effectively.

Programme design

  • examining what leading and managing mean in the 21st Century
  • exploring the role of the clinical leader in the modern NHS
  • a diagnostic process to give participants a deeper insight into their own approach and style as a leader
  • a choice of practical sessions to develop key leadership skills.

Learning outcomes

The programme will provide knowledge, insight and skills with:

  • a better understanding of what leading and managing mean in the new NHS context
  • a deeper insight into personal behaviour patterns and how they impact on others
  • skills and techniques for leading in practice effectively.

Advanced

Advanced Programme

This programme is open to clinicians in all specialties and health professions and is aimed at those who have attended a foundation programme and now wish to development their leadership skills further.

The implementation of the new NHS structure in April 2013, and the Government’s response to the Francis Report, together with the very considerable financial savings required of the service over the next two years, are creating significant challenges for clinical leaders; this short, focused, advanced programme has been designed specifically to enable you to lead more effectively in this turbulent environment. You will be challenged to evaluate your leadership style, skills and practice and encouraged to work through your own challenges, so that you will leave with renewed confidence to play an active role in developing services for patients in your organisation.

The programme will use small group work and case studies to enable you to explore current issues with your fellow participants and begin to develop effective solutions to some of our difficult healthcare challenges. You will be supported throughout by experienced facilitators from both the NHS and the private sector.

Programme Design

  • examines in more detail how to engage colleagues and staff in finding solutions to current healthcare challenges and considers, in particular, how to lead and manage the radical change now needed to deliver quality service against a backdrop of significant financial savings.

The advanced programme also offers the opportunity to access executive coaching as an additional development activity.
