About Us

Clinical Management and Leadership Courses at Keele University

Clinical management and leadership courses have been running at Keele University since 1983, when the late Professor Roger Dyson had the vision and wisdom to see the importance of clinicians understanding and becoming involved in the leadership and management of healthcare in the United Kingdom. They are now designed and delivered by the Clinical Management and Leadership Team, which is part of the School of Medicine at Keele University.

We specialise in leadership and management courses and development programmes for clinicians working in the NHS and in the private and voluntary sectors, which are delivered at Keele or on a bespoke basis at venues throughout the country.

We aim to equip our participants with the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to act with confidence in their roles.  To make this possible, we maintain strong links with both national and local policy makers to ensure that our courses and programmes are aligned to the vision and direction of modern, world class, healthcare.

Our vision is to support safe, effective and innovative healthcare in the UK through improving the skills of clinicians, at all levels, who are, or will be,  involved in the leadership and management of health services.

Our Team

Director - Jenny Cowpe

Jenny Cowpe

Jenny Cowpe is Director of the Clinical Management and Leadership Team at Keele and is responsible for the development and delivery of all the courses and programmes within the Team’s portfolio.

Before joining the University in 2001, Jenny followed a career as a General Manager and Trust Chief Executive in the National Health Service, training initially at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, followed by extensive experience in district general hospital, community and mental health organisations for 25 years.  During this period, she gained significant experience of leading and managing healthcare organisations and of the political and financial climates within which they operate.  In her various senior leadership roles, she has been responsible for financial turn arounds and for major service re-design in acute, community and mental health services. It was her experience of leading health organisations which stimulated her particular, and abiding, interest in developing leadership and management skills for key staff, particularly for clinicians.

Jenny’s interest in developing leadership and management skills is reflected in her current work at Keele, where, as Director of the Clinical Management and Leadership Team, she has responsibility for the major portfolio of CPD management and leadership programmes for Specialist Registrars, Specialty, Staff Grade and Associate Specialist Doctors and Consultants.  20 programmes are delivered each year and Jenny directs and teaches on many of the programmes personally, ensuring that their design evolves to reflect the ever changing NHS environment. In addition, Jenny also designs and delivers bespoke programmes for individual Trusts and Primary Care Trusts, with whom she develops a close professional relationship in order to ensure that the programmes delivered match expectations. She also teaches on the MBA (Health Executive) within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and on the health management module of the Masters in Medical Science degree in the Faculty of Health.  She has also taught overseas, most recently designing and delivering, with a colleague, a five-day leadership development programme for senior doctors and nurses in Uganda.

Jenny read history at the University of York and took her Masters Degree in Business Administration (Health Executive) at Keele University.  She holds a formal teaching qualification from Kings College, London, and is a member of the Institute of Healthcare Management.

Her research interests are in the fields of clinical leadership development and organisational design.
