Named for a mythical fiery beast that announced the coming of a saint in ancient japan. In modern Japanese it means giraffe.

Often confused with ‘kanzan ‘ but very different.

Young foliage brown-red. Reddish-pink double flowers. Rare. Less vigorous than Kanzan. Phylloid pistils. Flowers smaller than kirin, c.3.5 cm dia. Pedicel, calyx, large sepals all fresh green. Wider serrated sepals. Young leaves show furrowed rumpling. Teeth of leaves coarser, biserrated, point in all directions (Very different from Kanzan - regular, neat, and mostly single serration).
