Prunus incisa 'Oshidori'

Discovered in a farmer’s garden at Gotenbo City, Shizuoka prefecture. The name in Japanese means ‘Mandarin Ducks’, a reference to matrimonial loyalty, alluding to the fact that many flowers have 2 pistils (i.e. a loyal pair).

[Syn: P. incisa Thunberg ex Murrey ‘Oshidori’]

Character: A small garden tree with light pink double flowers, otherwise very similar to P. incisa. It is thought to be a hybrid rather than a selected clone from the species. Crown of the tree more cup shaped than type. Young twigs of shoots not pubescent.

Flowers in pendant clusters of 1 or 2, pink (RHS-53-D) in bud opening to lighter pink (RHS 55-D), c. 3-3.5 cm dia. with c .20-50 petals. Flowers early-mid April in Tokyo.

Young leaves yellow-green, appearing at time of flowering.
