Prunus 'Aratama'

Raised by Masatoshi Asari by crossing cultivar Botan with P. lannesiana in 1967. Considered an extreme improvement on the flowering cherry with finely wrinkled subtle and elegant flowers.

An umbrella-shaped tree, large, to 5-10 m high with double flowers, 26-31 petals, in clusters of 2-3, 5-6 cm dia., deep red or red. Buds are deep red. Flowers in mid-May.

Leaves broad-elliptical to ovate-elliptical, dark green with deep double serration on the margins. Young foliage red or pale red, appearing before the flowers.
