I joined Keele as Lecturer in Organic Chemistry in 1993 and was promoted to Senior lecturer in 2004, having previously been a research associate with Prof. T.R. Kelly at Boston College, USA. I obtained my BSc in 1987 from UMIST and went on to obtain a PhD from the University of Manchester in 1990 under the supervision of Prof. R.J. Stoodley. In 2005 I joined the Department of Medicines Management to develop the Keele undergraduate Pharmacy programme and currently hold the post of Director of Undergraduate Studies (Pharmaceutical Science) in the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health; please visit the School of Pharmacy web site for further information.

My research interests are varied and include various aspects of the physical and life sciences with a particular focus on the synthesis of molecules with biological or medicinal significance. I am particularly interested in the development of novel photosensitizers for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT) of a variety of pathologies, and also in the synthesis of functional organic molecules for recognition and catalysis. I also undertake research into teaching and learning, in particular the development of task-based group work exercises and studying the impact of individual learning preferences on performance in on-line group work.
