Chemical Sciences Research Seminars 2009-10

The North Staffordshire local section of the Royal Society of Chemistry covers all costs associated with our external speakers.

We are very grateful to the committee of the local section for their support in creating a vibrant research seminar series.

Time : 4pm

Location:  Lennard-Jones Laboratories in LJ1.25 (Library) or for external speakers in LJ1.75 (main lecture theatre).

The Materials Science of Archaeology.

Julian Henderson The provenance of archaeological materials using scientific techniques underpins many of the research questions that archaeology addresses, providing evidence of primary production, of trade in ancient materials and of the use of specific raw material sources. Thus any advances in this interdisciplinary research area are to be considered as contributing in fundamental ways. However, whilst chemical analysis is an essential first step in characterising the glass, it does not constitute an independent means of providing a provenance. A new way of providing a provenance for Islamic glasses is the determination of radiogenic isotopes in them, set in an environmental context. For the first time this is starting to provide evidence of a geological provenance for Islamic glasses in the Middle East, providing the basis for identifying where vessel types were made and when glass was traded.

Ion Mobility Mass-Spectrometry of peptides: Antibiotics, Amyloids and Nanoswitches

The technique of Ion Mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) allows the rotationally averaged collision cross section of ions to be obtained along with their mass to charge ratio. This extra information from a rapid sensitive gas-phase technique greatly enhances the capabilities of biological mass spectrometry. It provides accurate information on the solvent free conformations adopted by macromolecules, and with careful use of nano-electrospray ionisation, this can reflect their conformations in solution.
