Learning Behaviour - pupils and teachers
Abstract
Sir Alan will explore the ideas contained in his 2005 report 'Learning Behaviour' and which he expanded in his subsequent writings when an education adviser to the last government. Concentrating on practical strategies for promoting learner engagement he will stress his belief in the power of teachers and schools to transform the lives of children. In doing so he will be challenging, but optimistic.
Biography
Sir Alan was headteacher of Seven Kings High School 1985-2008. This was a very high achieving comprehensive school which was consistently judged to be outstanding. In 2005 at the request of the Minister of State Sir Alan chaired a group of practitioners investigating issues of school behaviour and discipline. Recommendations contained in the report, Learning Behaviour were included in the 2006 Education Act. In 2008 he was asked by the Secretary of State to conduct a further review of the issue and this concluded in 2009 with the publication of the report Learning Behaviour: Lessons Learned.
Sir Alan has been a Pro Director at the Institute of Education. He is a member of the Ofsted Board and a director of Teaching Awards for whom he is also a national judge. He was chair of the judging panel for the Ambition AXA Awards. Sir Alan was knighted in 2004 for services to education.
