Promoting and Celebrating School Success

20th Anniversary Conference

Keele University, 22nd September 2009

Keynote: Sir Tim Brighouse
Is there anything new to say about school improvement?

The presentation considers the impact of school improvement and school effectiveness initiatives over the last 20 years, and reflects on the meaning of "successful schools" now, as we approach the second decade of the 21st Century.

Keynote: Sir Michael Barber
From Successful Schools to Successful Systems: Lessons from the Last 20 Years

Michael Barber's contribution traces the evolution of our knowledge about public education from a focus on schools and projects (such as the Two Towns project) to a focus on whole systems, what characterises success and how is it achieved.

Keynote: Sir Philip Hunter
Choice in education

The presentation discusses the extent to which families exercise choice in access to education.  Comparing and contrasting circumstances experienced in education with those in other public services.

Keynote: Professor Kate Myers
School success: successful for whom?

When we talk about ‘successful schools’ we need to be clear who these schools are successful for. Which students are succeeding and what are they succeeding at? The Centre for Successful Schools was one of the first to give schools the tools to answer these questions. Perhaps the question we should now be asking is are schools essential for a successful education?
