Description for 2024/25

The module aims to facilitate the students understanding of the common study types, qualitative and quantitative data, basic quantitative data, psychometric properties of common measurement tools, search and identify evidence and apply these to common measurement tools used in clinical and practice settings.
The Principles of Assessment and Measurement module introduces the student to evidence base. It enables the student to understand and apply common research terms (i.e sensitivity, specificity) to common assessment and measurement tools (i.e goniometry).

Aims
This module aims to:
- introduce knowledge enquiry, evidence base and types of the study appropriate at this level
- explain basic quantitative data (e.g., mean, standard deviation)
- develop ability to search key data base (e.g., Medline)
- develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of assessment and measurement including psychometric properties
- introduce students to common practices within the Health and Rehabilitation setting that require assessment and/or measurement for the individual (assessment, diagnosis, monitoring progress, screening) and the service.

Intended Learning Outcomes

identify different study designs commonly used in health and rehabilitation- e.g., descriptive (survey and qualitative) and analytical (experimental and observational- appropriate at this level): 1
formulate search strategies to identify evidence using health related database: 1
explain the basic types of data collected in practice (qualitative, quantitative) and apply the basic properties of quantitative data: 1
compare the key psychometric properties (validity, reliability, error) of commonly used measures and diagnostic tests from data presented in journal articles: 1
recognise the contribution and challenges of assessment and measurement in health and rehabilitation settings: 1

Study hours

40 tutor led hours which includes
~18 hours lectures,
~6 hours workshops,
~ 6 hours seminars
~ 2 hours tutorials,
~ 6 hours practical and
~ 2 hours of assessment preparation classes
~ 20 hours of guided independent study
~90 hours of self-directed study which includes the study and learning for assessment purposes

Description of Module Assessment

1: Online Tasks weighted 100%
90 minute online task
The online computer task will include understanding of their study design, qualitative and quantitate data, levels of measurement, measures of central tendency and dispersion, simulated search strategy, students knowledge and understanding of the principles of assessment and measurement, their value and importance in the applied or clinical setting and methods to enhance their properties will be explored via various tasks, including multiple choice questions, matching, ordering sentences, writing simple search strategy.
