Description for 2024/25

The Principles of Rehabilitation module introduces the student to concepts of functioning, disability and rehabilitation. Students will have the opportunity to discuss these concepts in relation to common health conditions. The module aims to allow the students to identify and explain the impact of disability on the individual and society and discuss strategies to restore function relevant to their programme of study. Teaching will be delivered by a blended approach with both in-situ, and online (asynchronous and synchronous) learning and teaching strategies to ensure that all required knowledge, evaluation and understanding of key principles in rehabilitation are delivered for all types of learners. The teaching and learning strategies will be adjusted for individuals as required by the academic tutors to ensure a student-facing learning environment. Additionally, there are opportunities within this module to engage with expert patients about the impact of their health condition.11

Aims
To introduce the student to the science and classification of disability and functioning.
To explore the how disability impacts on functioning.
To introduce the student to prevalence, incidence, presentation, pathophysiology of the common conditions and rehabilitation strategies which minimise the impact of disability in common conditions.

Study hours

40 tutor-led hours which includes
~24 hours lectures with 50% in-situ and 50% online
~4 hours workshops, seminars, tutorials,
~10 hours directed self-study (e.g., NICE guidelines);
~2 hours of assessment preparation classes
110 hours of independent study including:
~90 hours self-directed study;
~20 hours of self-directed assessment preparation

A 1500 word essay
From a choice of common conditions, students will choose one condition and discuss the relevance of classification, incidence, prevalence, presentation and pathophysiology of their chosen condition and potential impact on disability and functioning for an individual; and identify and list rehabilitation strategies for that condition.
