Description for 2024/25

Stage 2 continues to provide a fully integrated and contextualised course of study comprising periods of learning, assessment, feedback, and reflection. Stage 2 consists of two cycles throughout which run the linked themes of pharmaceutical science and formulation, pharmacology and drug action, therapeutics and law ethics and pharmacy practice. This allows the practice of pharmacy to be linked explicitly to the science-rich aspects of the programme. Specific topics will include the relationship between absorption, distribution and elimination of drugs and their physico-chemical properties and formulation, analytical techniques, the manufacture and use of sterile pharmaceuticals, the action of drugs on molecular targets, cells and physiological systems, therapeutic and adverse effects of drugs, the potential role of pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics in personalised medicine, extemporaneous preparation of medicines, drug interactions, drug resistance and the consequences for patient care and the lawful supply of medicinal products. The theme of the gastrointestinal system is currently used to allow students to develop the links between these sub-disciplines throughout the year.

Aims
The principal aim is to further develop knowledge and skills in a wide variety of disciplines by demonstrating the linkages between applied topics in science and practice that underpin all subsequent learning.

1: Laboratory Assessment weighted 18%
1st Cycle laboratory skills assessment
The laboratory assessment will comprise elements from multiple laboratory sessions during the 1st semester

2: Practical Assessment weighted 7%
Practical skills assessment 1
The practical skills assessment will cover a variety of academic and professional skills-based tasks.

3: Mixed Exam weighted 25%
Semester 1 integrated examination
The Semester 1 exam will be an integrated examination, comprising of two exam papers. There will be an integrated exam covering content delivered within semester 1. The exam will comprise of 2 papers; paper 1 will be a short response paper (e.g. VSAs, MCQs, other short answer format). Paper 2 will comprise of long answer questions. Low stake assessments (5%) will be incorporated within this component. Examples of low stake assessments may include quizzes and other similar forms of assessment covering a variety of key topics from Semester 1.

4: Laboratory Assessment weighted 12%

The laboratory assessment will comprise elements from multiple laboratory sessions during the 2nd semester

5: Practical Assessment weighted 13%
Practical skills assessment 2
The practical skills assessment will cover a variety of academic and professional skills-based tasks in Microbiology and Pharmacy practice.

6: Mixed Exam weighted 25%
Semester 2 integrated examination
The Semester 2 exam will be an integrated examination, comprising of two exam papers. There will be an integrated exam covering content delivered within semester 2. The exam will comprise of 2 papers; paper 1 will be a short response paper (e.g. VSAs, MCQs, other short answer format). Paper 2 will comprise of long answer questions. 7: Professional Development weighted 0%
Professional skills development
The Professional Development assessment will include CPD activities, competency assessments (including laboratory skills, pharmacy practice skills, calculations, communication skills and placement portfolio of competence), case studies in ethics, and evidence of professionalism measured by Professional Activity Credits.

8: Mixed Exam weighted 0%
End of year synoptic assessment
This assessment will comprise both group work and individual assessment. It will potentially cover all topics studied during the year, but will focus in particular on demonstrating understanding of the integration of those topics.
