Description for 2024/25

This module will further develop language skills gained in Russian 1 and 2, expand vocabulary and grammar base enabling students to speak, write and read Russian carrying out simple tasks they are likely to encounter in travelling, living or studying in Russia. Topics will include staying in hotels, travelling in Russia, talking about hobbies and interests. Grammar topic amongst others will include verbs of motion, all of the Russian cases for nouns and adjectives, formation of dates.
Teaching will be based on using different audio and video materials from www.learnrussian.rt.com, and also the textbook focusing on people's life in modern Russia. Various aspects of contemporary Russian life will be discussed giving an insight into Russian culture and traditions. There will be a variety of tasks and exercises in class time (listening comprehensions, role-play and reading and writing tasks). Students will consolidate the skills acquired in class through further web-based self-study exercises.

This module aims to develop and consolidate Russian language skills acquired in Russian 2, as well as an understanding of Russian life and culture.
To develop and reflect upon strategies for successful language learning.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and understand familiar words, and basic sentences related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. personal information) when people speak slowly and clearly: 1,3
Read and extract key information from short, simple sentences and texts written in Russian, and translate them to English: 1,2
Interact in very simple, familiar situations, asking and answering simple questions in areas of immediate need, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly: 3
Write simple sentences and texts providing personal information in Russian: 1,2
Understand and use simple grammatical structures and rules and compare them to English: 1,2,3
Recognize and act upon very basic cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations and demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in Russia: 1,2,3

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one Russian language module per semester
