Description for 2024/25


Aims
This module aims to develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, experiences, and it is designed for those who already have some competence in BSL. Students will participate in longer and more varied conversations in BSL and will have the opportunity to further develop their receptive and productive skills in BSL. Some regional variations in BSL will be introduced.

Study hours

22 hours contact teaching.
98 hours class preparation, revision, and private study.
15 hours preparation for and completion of Learner Journal.
15 hours preparation for and attendance at Practical/Oral Exam.

School Rules

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students can only take one BSL module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Online Tasks weighted 25%
Learner Journal
Learner Journal of approximately 1300 words. Students will be required to reflect on specific aspects of dead culture in the UK and write a contrastive language analysis.

2: Competence weighted 25%
Receptive Task
Receptive task: students will watch a video clip played and signed in BSL, they will be able to take notes, and then they will have to answer several multiple-choice questions related to the video.

3: Practical Exam weighted 50%
Oral Exam in receptive and productive skills.
Students will complete a 10-15 minute productive and receptive test, a one-to-one conversation signed in BSL.
