Spanish 5 or equivalent (e.g. AS-level grade D, GCSE grade A or A*/7-9, CEF level B1)
This module is designed for students who have completed Spanish 5 (or equivalent). The core skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing will be expanded, and communicative competence and awareness of grammar will be developed further. Teaching will be based around a set course book which will be supplemented by a range of video material. Students will learn to describe a journey, compose a CV; assess past experiences; talk about habits in the past; express obligation and possibility; Spain and its traditions and some regions such as the Basque country will be studied in more detail, through documentaries, readings, etc. There will be a variety of tasks and exercises during each class, such as discussion and role play; listening comprehension and reading and writing tasks and students will be required to complete a range of self-study tasks for course work.. For computer-assisted learning, KLE will enable students to enhance their self-study skills and research for some of the module tasks. There is also languages exchanges and a Spanish club once a month led by students where to meet Spanish native speakers and learn further aspects of Spanish and Hispanic culture.Upon successful completion of this module and provided that students apply themselves fully to the course, by attending all classes, full use of practice materials on KLE will and engaging whenever possible with Spanish native speakers, they will normally have reached level the initial steps of B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR - B1)
Aims
To improve students' fluency in the language and to consolidate previous grammatical knowledge as well as introduce some of the more problematic aspects of Spanish grammar. To enable students to develop general language learning skills. To offer insights into cultural specificity of Spanish speaking countries (mainly Spain and Latin America).

Description of Module Assessment
1: Oral Exam weighted 50%Spoken interaction assessmentA 6-7 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive) and listening (receptive) skills. Task may include role play, presentation, question and answer, description and similar. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups individual marks will be awarded to each student and the total time allowed will be 5-6 minutes per student.
2: Exam weighted 50%1 hour reading/writing examExamination testing writing and reading skills and the command of active and passive vocabulary from the topic areas studied.
