Successful completition of PHY-20026: Statistical Mechanics and Solid State Physics
Aims
The module aims to introduce the students to the world of two-dimensional (2D) materials, presenting their main features, properties and potential technological applications. It also aims to discuss the role of 2D materials in devices and products that will revolutionize the 21st Century and their impact on society, industry and environment.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Communicate effectively the key fundamental physical properties and applications of 2D materials and the differences between 2D materials and other classes of materials: 1,2,3Locate, evaluate and extract information from the literature related to 2D materials: 1,2Evaluate the properties and characteristics of 2D materials and apply this understanding to rationalise and predict the applications of 2D materials: 1,2,3

Description of Module Assessment
1: Essay weighted 40%1500-2000 word essayStudents will write an essay (1500-2000 words) that is intended to describe the physics behind the properties and potential applications of a selected 2D material. The essay is to be written in such a way that it could be used as the lecture notes to accompany the teaching of the topic to Level 6 students.
2: Oral Presentation weighted 40%Oral PresentationStudents will individually present a talk (~15 minutes) to their peer group and the module leader and answer questions on the subject of the talk. The topic of the talk will be the physics behind the properties and applications of a selected 2D material.
3: Multiple Choice Questions - Knowledge weighted 20%Weekly multiple-choice questions or quizzesStudents will be given weekly assessments in a form of multiple-choice questions or quizzes in order to evaluate their understanding of the subjects.
