The module will showcase a variety of topics in modern groups theory, and illustrate how these techniques and ideas can be combined to shed light on important unsolved mathematical problems, such as the classification of finite groups.
Aims
This module aims to acquaint students with a variety of advanced topics in modern group theory, with particular emphasis on how these may be applied to problems concerning the classification of finite groups of certain orders.
Intended Learning Outcomes
establish and prove some of the major theorems of group theory, and apply these to solve problems concerning groups and their applications: appraise a given finite group and create its automorphism group: evaluate and apply suitable techniques to extension problems for groups:
