This module is intended to help students with the transition from the methods based approach of A level to the higher levels of rigour and understanding expected at degree level. It begins by discussing mathematical statements and various strategies of proof. This is followed by a short exposition of naive set theory. The remainder of the module covers the algebraic development of number systems and their properties followed by the fundamental topics in matrix and vector algebra, providing a solid introduction to algebra at degree level.
Aims
This module aims to provide students with a solid foundation in Algebra for the żdegree-level study of pure mathematics. The module will emphasise the need for care and rigour in presenting formal mathematical arguments and will provide students with knowledge of many key topics in pure mathematics which are needed for study beyond FHEQ Level 4.

Learning/teaching comprises 72 hours lectures, and 20 hours examples classes. Independent study comprises 20 hours for assignments, 80 hours preparation for examples classes, 20 hours preparation for class test and exam, 84 hours consolidation of lecture material, and 4 hours for completion of class test and examination.

1: Assignment weighted 7%Semester 1 take home assignmentA take-home, written assignment. This consists of a set of questions with pre-allocated space for written solutions. Students should expect to spend 5 hours on this assignment.
2: Coursework weighted 8%Semester 1 CourseworkA take-home, written coursework. This consists of a set of questions with pre-allocated space for written solutions. Students should expect to spend 5 hours on this assessment.
3: Class Test weighted 35%Closed book Class TestAn end of semester closed book class test based on the material covered in Semester 1 of this module.
4: Assignment weighted 8%Semester 2 take home assignmentA take-home, written assignment. This consists of a set of questions with pre-allocated space for written solutions. Students should expect to spend 5 hours on this assignment.
5: Coursework weighted 7%Semester 2 CourseworkA take-home, written coursework. This consists of a set of questions with pre-allocated space for written solutions. Students should expect to spend 5 hours on this assessment.
6: Exam weighted 35%Closed book examinationA closed book examination based on material covered in Semester 2 of the module. There will be a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 questions all of which must be answered.
