Students must have completed BSL1 and BSL2 or equivalent.
British Sign Language is used by over 150,000 people in the UK, and has been recognized as an official minority language by the government since 2003. Knowledge of BSL is useful in a number of careers, including education, health and social services, as well as being a rewarding skill to learn. Students taking BSL-90003 can work towards taking the external Signature qualification.
Aims
Students will further develop their productive and receptive skills in BSL, building on their previous study. The module will concentrate on the development of students' understanding and competency in using the grammatical rules of BSL, including area such as negation, affirmation, question forms, directional verbs and connectors. Students will also further their knowledge of deaf history and culture.

Description of Module Assessment
1: Online Tasks weighted 25%Learner JournalLearner Journal of approximately 1000 words including a contrastive language analysis.
2: Competence weighted 25%Receptive TaskReceptive task: students will watch a video clip played and signed in BSL, they will be able to take notes, and then they will have to answer several multiple-choice questions related to the video.
3: Practical Exam weighted 50%Oral exam in receptive and productive skills.Students will give a 3-5 minute individual presentation, using BSL, and engage in a 7-10 minute conversation about the presentation.
