Description for 2021/22

In this module, students learn skills for interactive realtime processing, including the use of software and its application to advanced live audio processing. A variety of time-domain and spectral-domain techniques are covered including: filtering, FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) based algorithms (convolution, vocoding, etc.), granularization of streaming sound, delay effects. The module also discusses technical and aesthetic aspects of the creative repertoire that use relevant realtime processing and live performance techniques, as well as providing guidance in related creative project work (e.g. interactive composition, improvisation).

Aims
- To establish an understanding of interactive creation and realtime audio processing;
- To articulate the technical and aesthetic impact of interactivity in the practice of live performance;
- To acquire an understanding and appreciate the creative potential of the main current techniques used in the creation of work employing realtime digital processing.

Intended Learning Outcomes

apply theories and methods of inquiry to aesthetics and techniques of technologically assisted creative work: 1
define theoretical and aesthetic systems and relate theory and practice to each other: 1
demonstrate grasp of current theories of compositional praxis and technical developments: 1
apply compositional skills that emphasise advanced creative solutions to given artistic challenges: 1
realise theoretical models for sound processing by designing dedicated applications: 1

Study hours

21 hours of lectures, workshops and tutorials
20 hours of reflection, revision and consolidation of lecture, workshop and individual supervision content, research through bibliographical and computer mediated sources through individual or group study work.
20 hours of listening (recommended works from the repertoire), reflection and revision of aesthetic and technical aspects based on lecture content, bibliographical and computer mediated sources.
29 hours of practical work in the lab or student¿s own digital audio workstation on preliminary tasks, to carry out studio tasks, familiarise with equipment and experiment with relevant techniques (based on instructional material on virtual learning environment).
60 hours of preparation of creative project portfolio and supporting documentation.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Portfolio weighted 100%
Creative project portfolio
Creative project portfolio. For example, this will consist of interactive work based on realtime processing and creation of a software instrument for live performance. The requirements will include development of sonic gestures using time and frequency domain digital signal processing (DSP) as well as multi-channel/surround sound (5.1) diffusion. The total duration of the composition should be ca. 4:00-5:00 minutes. Written documentation of around 2000 - 2500 words explaining the techniques employed and the way in which these were integrated in order to produce the creative project.
