This module is an opportunity for students to explore in depth a particular topic or problem in mathematics. Each student is supervised by a member of staff throughout the execution of the project. The project will require engagement with appropriate mathematics literature. If relevant, students may need to perform some computational work utilising specialised mathematics packages.
Aims
This module aims¿ to provide students with an opportunity to study a particular topic or problem in mathematics in depth and to report on it in a variety of forms. Specifically, this module aims:1) To further develop students¿ abilities to analyse mathematics literature.2) To develop skills in using research materials necessary for interpreting and evaluating mathematics.3) To develop students¿ ability to investigate a problem in depth over an extended period and produce reports thereon.4) To develop students¿ ability to communicate mathematical results to audiences using a variety of different communication methods, for example, academic posters.5) To produce a final-year dissertation.
Intended Learning Outcomes
evaluate a range of mathematical techniques to solve mathematical problems: 1,2communicate mathematical results to an academic audience in written and oral form: 1,2,3appraise a range of potentially conflicting information and synthesise this into a professional mathematical dissertation: 1synthesise a range of literature, then present this information in written form: 3
Compulsory supervisions with project supervisor: 10 hours.Independent study and research, preparation of literature review, poster and final dissertation:¿ 290 hours.
Barred combination: MAT-30016 Project II.General aptitude (assessed by a formal interview and/or recommendations from their personal tutor, year tutors and/or programme director).
Description of Module Assessment
1: Dissertation weighted 70%DissertationComprehensive report on the mathematical analysis carried out in the project. The length of the dissertation will normally be approximately 30 pages. Formatting guidelines will be provided.
2: Coursework weighted 15%Poster PresentationA professionally produced academic poster in the style presented at conferences. The poster is presented to an academic audience. Students will be questioned on their poster.
3: Literature Review weighted 15%Review of relevant literatureComprehensive and detailed review of literature in the chosen topic area. The length of the review is normally five pages. Formatting guidelines will be provided.
