Open Days & Networking Meetings
BTG Open Days & Networking Meetings play a very important part to our initiative as they aim to bring together researchers from different parts of the University, who may never meet, to visit and see what is going on within their own campus ultimately improving communication across disciplines.
School of Computing & Mathematics Open Day |
On the 4th of April 2012 BTG held its first open day at the School of Computing and Mathematics. Several research themes were presented in the Research Laboratory of the School. The school has a state-of-the-art robotics research arena equipped with a VICON motion tracking system, a SCITOS G5 mobile robot from MetraLabs Germany and several custom built and miniature robotic platforms. Research in robotics at the school includes mathematical modelling of robot behaviour and biologically-inspired models of navigation in robotics. Colleagues that are involved in evolutionary computation also presented their parallel multi-processing units (employing GPU's) that are used to significantly speed-up the execution of genetic algorithms. |
The activity was open to the University as a whole and proved to be a great success, introducing researchers from different disciplines and featured on the 20th of April at The Week @ Keele publication. |

Law, Ethics, Medicine & Bioscience Networking Lunch |
Another successful cross-disciplinary networking meeting was held on the 30th of April 2012 and organised as a “speed dating event” to introduce members of the Law/ Ethics research groups to the members the Human Biomedical/ Regenerative Medicine groupings at Keele. The event proved to be a great opportunity for the delegates to discuss the potential cross disciplinary links between their research activities which has already led to some novel ideas for small projects which are being proposed for BTG funding. The Meeting was featured on the 4th of May at The Week @ Keele. |
A further workshop/sandpit is now planned to enable more detailed discussions leading to new cross disciplinary initiatives and applications for funding at Keele. In addition, one other similar styled activity will take place in 2012 in the Music department. |

Keele Community Day |
| To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the award of Keele’s Charter as a university, the University as a whole threw open its doors and encouraged everyone to join for a day full of fun on Saturday the 23 of June 2012. This was a great opportunity for BTG awarded projects share their findings and aims with the greater community. Please click on the following link to view on of the Community Day poster. |
Multidisciplinary Workshops
Ageing SymposiumOur first workshop was focused on one of our platform programmes at Keele into Ageing. This was held on February 1st 2012. Keele University currently holds two major initiatives in ageing related research holding two ARUK Centres in Primary Care and Tissue engineering as well as ESRC programmes in Life Long Well Being. The University has a Social Science Institute of Ageing and our aim is to bring these groups alongside other department programmes to take part in a forum for dissemination through talks and break outs to consider cross cutting activities. Seven speakers will be presenting, drawn from all the faculties within the University. The disciplines covered include: epidemiology, chemistry, medicine, biology, law, economics, psychology, English, art and sociology. |
The Ageing Symposium was a great success and was featured on the 3rd of February in The Week @ Keele. Please click here for a full list of Ageing Symposium delegates.
Two Culture or Co-Evolution? |
An excellent literature and science workshop was held on Saturday, May 12th,2012 at Keele University. It included a closing address from Prof. Joanna Verrans, an internationally renowned microbiologist from MMU who also undertakes important work in science and public engagement; and who has worked extensively with MMU's writing school. The whole day was truly impressive, and very well received by all who attended. The event was open to Keele staff and Postgraduate students and featured at The Week@ Keele on the 18th of May. Keele Mass Spectrometry Workshop
On the 28th of May 2012, BTG held a Mass Spectroscopy Worshop which aimed to bring researchers together for an Informative approach to advancing diagnostics research.
The Workshop included a Session on Instumentation and Methodology as well as a session on Current clinical research followed by a discussion on funding opportunities and future perspectives. The event proved to be a great success helping to strengthen the Keele user-base and network of clinical and academic researchers.
