The Bupa Foundations Philip-Poole Wilson Seed Corn fund

Are you a new researcher looking for funding? Or do you have a great idea for new research?

The Bupa Foundations Philip-Poole Wilson Seed Corn fund is now open for applications.

If you are a healthcare professional involved in research or a university based researcher with an interest in health or social care with a great idea for new research, you can apply for a grant to help you develop your ideas. This could be to support pilot work, for example, or to bring together a team of people to work on a proposal.*

Projects should contribute to the Foundation's aims and at least one of the following objectives:

  • achieving sustained behaviour changes in relation to smoking, diet, physical activity and/or alcohol consumption
  • facilitating wellbeing and preventing mental ill health
  • improving patient decision-making through, for example, shared decision-making interventions
  • improving the design of community health activities by using new technologies to cost-effectively organise and interpret health outcome data

Seed corn grants of up to £20,000 per proposal are available and weve made applying simple. All applications can now be submitted online at grants.bupafoundation.co.uk. All you need to do is register and complete a short form. Short form applications closes on the 6th of July.

* Please note that each application must be made either by a researcher beginning their research career or if a pilot project by an experienced researcher, must include such a researcher on the team and contribute meaningfully to his/her development and training.

RAatE 2012 – Call for Participation

As the only UK conference focused on the latest innovations in Assistive Technology (AT), RAatE 2012 will be of interest to anyone who uses, works with, develops or conducts research in the field of AT.

This years’ topics of special interest include:

• Mobile AT Apps
• Telecare/Telehealth
• Robotics
• Special Access
• Service Developments
• Case Studies
• Outcome Analysis & Measurement
• AT in Ageing & Long Term Conditions
They welcome contributions from healthcare professionals, researchers, service providers and users on the full range of products and services designed to enable independence for disabled and older people. If you have a paper or poster that you would like to present that does not fall in to any of the above topics, they would still like to hear from you.
RAatE is a friendly and productive conference that offers you the opportunity to present your work to a unique multi-disciplinary audience dedicated to AT and the change to meet and share knowledge and experiences with other people working in the field.
Closing date for abstract submissions is 5pm on Monday 16 July 2012. More information on RAatE 2012 can be found at

Design for Wellbeing: Ageing and Mobility in the Built Environment

EPSRC is leading a call with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and invites proposals from interdisciplinary consortia for evidence led research into ageing and mobility in the built environment. This call is being run under the auspices of the Lifelong Health and Wellbeing (LLHW) cross-council ageing research programme which supports research addressing factors throughout life that influence health and wellbeing in older age.

This call is seeking to create a step change in interdisciplinary engineering, social science and design research for wellbeing in the built environment. There is up to £7M available (EPSRC up to £4M, ESRC up to £2M and AHRC up to £1M) to support a maximum of five large multi-disciplinary projects of up to three years duration.

Prospective applicants will need to complete an Expression of Interest form by 12:00 on Monday 10 September 2012.

The expressions of interest will be assessed by an expert short listing panel in September 2012 and those aligned appropriately with the assessment criteria will be invited to submit full proposals. The deadline for submitting an Expression of Interest is 12:00 on 10 September 2012. Those invited to submit a full proposal will be notified by the end of September 2012. The deadline for the submission of full proposals will be 28 November 2012, and will be peer-reviewed in March 2013 with the expectation that funding decisions will be made by the end of March 2013.

Timetable

There are two stages in the assessment process. This call invites Expressions of Interest (EoIs) which will be assessed by a shortlisting panel in September 2012. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to submit full proposals.

Predictive Modelling for Healthcare Technologies through Maths

Closing date: 12:00 on 09 July 2012
Category: Expression of interest
Related themes: Healthcare technologies, Mathematical sciences

This event will provide an opportunity to work collaboratively at the interface of mathematical sciences and healthcare technologies. The event will explore the challenges in this area and drive transformational research proposals aimed at improving predictive modelling in healthcare technologies. Expressions of interest in participation are now invited from those with relevant skills, and with enthusiasm for such transformative research.

This event will be ideally suited to those wanting to do 'new and different' rather than 'more of the same'. Importantly, it will provide ideal conditions for cross disciplinary breakthroughs.

This event is organised jointly by the EPSRC Mathematical Sciences capability theme and EPSRC Healthcare Technologies challenge theme, and up to £5 million is available for funding.
