About the Group
Members of the Basin Dynamics Research Group study sedimentary basins, their controls, fill, and subsequent deformation and inversion. Basin formation and inversion is considered at lithospheric scale using numerical analysis, and at smaller scales using seismic reflection interpretation and structural geological modelling.
Sedimentary basin fill is analysed using classical techniques of stratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy and sedimentology. Economic implications of sedimentology, stratigraphy and structural geology are modelled using integrated three-dimensional basin modelling approaches coupled with fluid flow models, with a strong emphasis on the geological uncertainties involved and their influence on commercially viable outcomes.
The group is support by strong collaborative research links with Cairn Oil, the British Geological Survey and commercial 3D oil industry software developers. Complementary staff expertise allows the Group to undertake collaborative research projects and commercial studies of both generic and applied nature.
This web site is designed to introduce you to Group members, their expertise and current research interests, Group resources and opportunities for PhD and Postdoctoral work.
Details of currently active research areas by staff members of the Group can be found under the Research page, and related currently active PhD projects under the PhD Projects page. The current activities of the Group are supported by a strong research history in the field of numerical basin modelling and details of past research that has now reached successful conclusion, but relates to current ongoing work, is given under the Archive page.
Please feel free to contact us at any time if you require further information on any aspect of the Group’s work.
Generic enquiries should be made to the Group leader Professor Graham Williams, or to specific Group members via links from this website.
