Dr Maggie Atkinson Lecture: Children's Rights in the Twenty-First Century
Monday 1st October, 2012. 18.00pm Westminster Theatre
Having signed the UN Convention on children's rights more than 20 years ago, are we sure we truly understand the word?
The Children's Commissioner for England and former Keele graduate, Dr Maggie Atkinson will deliver a public lecture and will explore the issues surrounding the notion of children's rights.
What do we understand about and how comfortable are we with the notion of children’s rights? Did we mean what we said when we signed up to the Convention? What are the implications for policy, practice, and wider society, if we live by what we signed and ratified in 1991?
Dr Atkinson’s lecture will explore these vital issues and prompt the thinking of policymakers, practitioners and researchers on childhood, the life and wellbeing of the child, and the attitudes of society and the media towards citizens under the age of 18 years old.
The lecture is free to attend, but please reserve your place by emailing events@keele.ac.uk
