Keele Concerts Society present Kerry Andrew and 'sound collective' with Birdlore
30 October 2013 7.30pm Keele Hall
Birdlore
Birdsong and folk music traditions from America, Britain and Bohemia are combined in a fascinating evening of intimate music making.
The precise nature of American influences on Dvorák's glorious 12th String Quartet are argued about, but one influence from his adopted New World continent was the song of the Scarlet Tanager - a song bird which makes a guest appearance in the third movement. The superb players of 'sound collective' will thrill with this glorious, justly–famed music.
After a relaxed interval, more birds will fly in from the confines of the grounds at Keele. Composer and performer Kerry Andrew - in her guise as folk artist You Are Wolf - presents her song project Birdlore (murders, charms and murmurations) which explores British birds through traditional and original folk songs. Strings and wind musicians from 'sound collective' join Kerry for this exciting and very intriguing collaboration.
Kerry writes: Birds are peppered throughout our folk history: wrens, hawks, ravens, cuckoos flit about through our traditional stories and songs, bringing good luck, omens of death, or signs of everlasting love; Birdlore is a musical exploration of this through the folklore of British birds, English and American folk song, leftfield pop influences, hypnotic looping and field recordings. The set includes a looped version of Dolly Parton’s Little Sparrow and a Scottish slant on the well-known English song, Molly Bawn.
