Keele Philharmonic Orchestra: Ives & Haydn
08 November 2013 6.30pm Keele University Chapel
The first KPO concert of the academic year is a short programme for chamber orchestra. The enigmatic inner-world of American composer Charles Ives, (1874-1954) whom most people knew only as a successful insurance salesman, is explored in The Unanswered Question. Strings representing Druids, a trumpet asking about the nature of existence, woodwind seek the 'invisible answer'....? The nature of existence explored, in just ten minutes.
After that, we're back on Terra Firma with Haydn's final Symphony, No.104. Written and first performed in London whilst he was living in England, he wrote of the great success of the first performance "The whole company was thoroughly pleased and so was I. I made 4000 gulden on this evening: such a thing is possible only in England."
Keele Philharmonic Orchestra (KPO) was founded in 1987 by the Keele University Music Department and became an independent body in 1995. KPOC expanded further in 2001 when the choir was reformed. The orchestra is run by a student committee and is under new musical leadership as Tom Hammond now joins the department as Conducting Fellow. Tom is an experienced conductor of orchestras and choirs who works with top-flight professionals, music conservatoires and leading non-professional ensembles in the UK.
