Keele Writing: Four Writers

Four prize winning / published writers from Keele University will be giving a selection of live readings at Keele Hall.
Emma Henderson - Emma gained a MA, with distinction, in Creative Writing at Birkbeck in 2006, and was a finalist in the 2007 Asham Award. Her first novel, Grace Williams Says It Loud was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction and has been nominated for the London Book Award 2011 in the London Awards for Art and Performance. It was also shortlisted for the Wellcome Trust Book Prize 2010, the Commonwealth Writers Prize in the Best First Book category, the Author’s Club First Novel award and the Waverton Good Read Award. More recently, it was shortlisted for the Galaxy Book Awards in the New Writers section.
James Sheard - James has been writing and publishing poetry for over 20 years. He completed the M.A. Writing at Sheffield Hallam University in 2003. His pamphlet from that year – Hotel Mastbosch – won the Ictus Prize, and went on to be the Poetry Book Society’s Pamphlet Choice for Winter 2003. His current collection - Dammtor - was published in September 2010 and was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.
Gwendoline Riley - Gwendoline Riley is the author of four novels - Cold Water, Sick Notes, Joshua Spassky and Opposed Positions - and a collection of short stories. She has won the Betty Trask Award, the Somerset Maugham Prize and been shortlisted for the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize.
Joe Stretch - Joe studied Politics at Manchester University, where he was subsequently a Writing Fellow. He is published by Vintage Books and Jonathan Cape. His first novel ‘Friction’ appeared in 2007, and was followed by ‘Wildlife’ in 2009. His third novel - 'The Adult' won a Somerset Maugham Award in 2013 and was shortlisted for The Portico Prize. He has also published short stories. Joe also makes films. 'Wizard's Way' won the LOCO 2013 Discovery Award and Best Comedy Feature at the 2012 London Independent Film Festival. He is also lyricist and lead singer of Manchester band Performance.
Joe teaches both Creative Writing and the Song Lyric at Keele.
