15th May, 6-8pm, Keele University Art Gallery, Chancellor's Building

A portrait of Mrs Stross by J Kramer, 1922. Park of Keele Uni Art Collection.
Mrs Barnett Stross, Jacob Kramer, 1922.

An exhibition of art donated by Sir Barnett Stross to Keele University in 1962. With a special live performance of music created by Keele University students for the documentary 'Lidce: A Light Across the Sea'.

Stross was one of the key figures in the development of the University College of North Staffordshire later to become Keele University. As part of the Exploratory Committee in 1946 along with Lindsay, Tawney, Moberly and Horwood, Stross worked to promote the creation of the University amongst important political circles. He was awarded one of the first honorary degrees in the summer of 1965.

His lifelong love was art. For Keele University Sir Barnett Stross generously gifted his own extensive collection of art, including works by Ayrton, Muirhead Bone, Brabazon, Duncan Grant, Jacob Kramer, LS Lowry, Grete Lobenstein, John Minton, Charles Murray, Sir Frank Short, Rowley Smart, Meryl Watts and Edward Wiralt, with the donation forming the basis of the University art collection. The majority of works will be on display with a special ‘preview night only’ appearance of The Mill Gates by L S Lowry.

Stross is most famously remembered for spearheading the humanitarian campaign ‘Lidice Shall Live’. Inspired Film, residents of Keele Science Park have been working with Keele University students to create the soundtrack for their soon to be premiered film ‘Lidice - A Light Across the Sea’. We are privileged to receive a live performance of their music on the evening.

Exhibition continues until Wednesday 12th June.
