The leaf is very variable in shape and the one illustrated here is not typical. In essence it is one of the few maples in which all the parts of the leaf are green - leaf stalk (petiole), leaf blade and the veins. The leaf becomes a rather thick, dark, glossy green with age. There are usually three lobes but occasionally none at all. The tree at Keele has hardly any lobes. One distinctive feature is the presence of small, white, peg-like projections on the veins on the under-side of the leaf.
In autumn the leaves turn yellow to orange.
At Keele : we have just one example; where the stream exits Barnes Dell; square Q14; compartment 12c.
