Meadow Brown Maniola jurtina

The larvae of this species feed on grasses. The adult is on the wing from June to October and is the typical butterfly of grassland areas.

It is sometimes confused with the Gatekeeper but it is larger and has only a single white spot inside the black circle whereas the Gatekeeper has two.

It is common in the grassy areas of the lower half of campus and Clock House Drive.
