US History and Politics

The aims of this pathway are to enhance your understanding of US history and politics, and to equip you with the skills necessary to undertake further, independent research in this area. If you opt for the pathway in US History and Politics, you will take the following modules in addition to the Faculty of Humanities research training modules and the dissertation requirement

  • Research Methods and Political Analysis (30 credits), a module designed to explore a variety of research approaches and strategies across the disciplines of History and Political Science
  • one module of independent study (30 credits). The range of options may vary from year to year. Current staff specialisms on which option modules are based include: Civil War History; Southern History and Politics; Cold War Society; Intellectual History of the US; Religion and Politics in the US; Heritage Sites and Public History; American Government (US Presidency, Congressional Politics; Electoral Politics); US Public Policy (Social Welfare; Environment; Education); State and Local Politics.

Applicants for the M.Res. should normally have a good honours degree (2.1 or above) in a relevant humanities subject. However, students from different backgrounds who believe they have the capacity to undertake postgraduate work in the humanities should contact us to discuss their situation.
