I read English and Philosophy as an undergraduate at the University of Reading where I also took my doctorate. My main research areas focus on the works of Ezra Pound and Henry James, the intellectual history of Modernist aesthetics, American notions of artistry, relations between history, fiction, and commercial forms, and literary negotiations with science.
Current projects include a monograph on the constructivist line in American literary language from Emerson to Brautigan, a further monograph on the Hugh Selwyn Mauberley sequence, essays on Modernism and the notion of the Fourth Dimension (in collaboration with Meriel Lland), and on James and digression. I am in the process of completing an essay on Brautigan's Trout Fishing in America and am about to start thinking about the 'critic of the seven arts', James Huneker.
