David Adams was an undergraduate at Clare College Cambridge and has graduate degrees from Yale and Oxford. He is a historian with primary interests in the life and times of Franklin D. Roosevelt and in twentieth century U.S. foreign policy. He founded the American Studies programme at Keele in 1961, and headed the Department until March 1993.

The David Bruce Centre, of which he was the Founding Director, 1969-1996.

His most recent publications are the 25 volume series of Documents from the British Foreign Office Confidential Print and with Cornelis A. Van Minnen ed., Reflections on American Exceptionalism (1994). His many outside commitments include membership of both the British and European American Studies Associations' executive committees.
