 James Beardmore

Background

I graduated from Keele University in 2005 with 1st class honours in Software Engineering and Physics.

My software engineering dissertation was on the design and production of a knowledge-representation and linking tool, whereas my physics dissertation was on an original piece of research into the aerodynamics of wind turbines, one outcome of which was an equation that could be used to determine the ideal parameters (e.g. blade-angle and number) for any type of turbine under a known load and air-velocity.

I successfully defended my PhD thesis in 2009, which focused on a computational approach to studying the biological availability of aluminium, under the supervision of Dr Christopher Exley (main supervisor), and Dr Gordon Rugg (second supervisor, Computer Science).

I followed this with a short period in a technical consultancy rôle in the UK ceramics industry.

Current Research

I am currently engaged in postdoctoral research into the formation of hydroxyaluminosilicates, with an emphasis on natural waters. This will primarily be by measurement of particle sizes and zeta potentials, and computational methods derived from those used during my PhD. These investigations will also be complemented by mass spectroscopy and quantum chemical studies.

Directly related academic interests include computational modelling by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods, and how the results of extremely low-level treatments like DFT can be used as "rules" for a much larger, abstracted methods. I am also interested in the application of argumentation and approaches such as verifier, as tools to support and enhance traditional research techniques.
